Healthy Steam
Soft, delicate, and light — the purest way to taste the plant-based filling. Below: how to use a bamboo steamer, and how long to steam pork dumplings and every other variety straight from frozen.
- Bring water to a boil in a steamer or pot with a steamer basket.
- Line the basket with parchment or cabbage leaves to prevent sticking.
- Arrange frozen dumplings in a single layer, not touching.
- Cover and steam 7–9 minutes until hot throughout. Serve with dipping sauce.
Chef's tip: A quick dipping sauce — soy sauce, a splash of rice vinegar, sesame oil, and chopped scallion.
How to use a bamboo steamer: set 1–2 inches of simmering water in a wok or wide pot, line the basket with parchment or cabbage leaves so nothing sticks, arrange the dumplings in a single layer with space between them, cover and steam 7–9 minutes. Baskets stack, so you can run two layers at once. How long to steam pork dumplings: the same 7–9 minutes from frozen — pork and vegetable varieties cook at the same rate.
How to steam dumplings without a steamer: set a metal colander or a heatproof plate on crumpled foil inside a covered pot — same result, no special equipment.
